Background:
Dr. Mulgrew was born and raised in Orange County, CA. He then spent his undergraduate, medical school and residency years in Northern and Southern California. After residency, he moved with his wife and two small children to Seattle, where he completed a fellowship in Sports Medicine and served as a team physician for the Washington Huskies. He and his family returned to Southern California for 2 years where he worked in private practice. Dr. Mulgrew is excited to be in Monterey where his wife can teach math/computer science at her alma mater, and where he can surf, play drums, and enjoy family time.

Why he chose pediatrics:
“My mother was an elementary school teacher when I was growing up, so I often helped out in her classroom and enjoyed reading to the kids and playing sports/games with them. I even worked as a substitute teacher the year before starting medical school. As a result, I immediately felt at home among the kids and their families during my Pediatrics rotations in medical school. I also love sports and promoting active lifestyles, which led me to pursue added training in sports medicine.”

Personal interests:
Spending time with his wife, son and daughter, surfing, playing drums, reading, enjoying the outdoors.

His all-time favorite kids’ books:
Wild About Books by Judy Sierra
Richard Scarry’s Best Mother Goose Ever by Richard Scarry
The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein
